The Gate Size Calculator is an essential tool for injection moulding engineers and designers. Selecting the right gate size is crucial to ensure proper material flow, minimize defects, and achieve consistent part quality. With our calculator, you can quickly determine the optimal gate diameter or gate width for a wide range of polymers, including ABS, Polycarbonate (PC), Nylon, PET, PBT, and many more.

Using the correct gate size improves the shear rate, cavity filling, and cooling performance, ultimately reducing scrap and enhancing production efficiency.

Why Gate Size Matters

Proper gate sizing directly impacts the quality and performance of your plastic parts. An undersized gate can cause excessive shear, surface defects, or incomplete filling, while an oversized gate may increase cycle time and material waste.

Our calculator helps you:

  • Maintain optimal shear rates for each polymer.
  • Ensure even cavity filling.
  • Reduce warpage, voids, or sink marks.
  • Optimize gate placement and dimensions for your injection mould.

How to Use the Gate Size Calculator

  1. Enter the weight of your part (excluding sprue).
  2. Specify the number of gates in your mould.
  3. Set the fill time (seconds) for proper injection.
  4. Choose gate type: round or rectangular (input diameter, width, and depth).
  5. Select the polymer from the dropdown list.
  6. Click Calculate to view recommended gate size and calculated shear rates.

If the calculated shear rate exceeds the polymer’s maximum limit, adjust the fill time or gate dimensions as recommended.

Recommended Gate Sizes for Common Polymers

Our calculator supports dozens of polymers, each with its own shear rate and gate size parameters:

  • ABS: High impact resistance and good flow for thin-walled parts.
  • Acrylic: Rigid with excellent optical clarity.
  • Nylon 6/6 & Glass-Filled Nylon: Durable, high-temperature parts.
  • Polycarbonate (PC): Strong, impact-resistant, ideal for transparent parts.
  • PBT & PET: Engineering plastics with stable dimensional properties.
  • Polypropylene (PP): Low density, flexible, easy to fill.

Using the Gate Size Calculator, you can quickly determine the optimal gate dimensions for any of these polymers to improve production efficiency and reduce defects.
